June 14 and June 16 Soccer Practice Results
for David Virgil Hobbs

June 14 Soccer Practice

Shots were taken at the end of a 5 touch air dribble (ball kept in air and under control while moving) of about 10 meters. Ball was shot on the 5th touch.  Air dribble started moving almost directly away from goal; 4th touch sent ball towards right sideline (sideline closer to my shoulder as I face the opposing goal).

Understanding the Results table:

A: chronological order shot number. B: angle of ball after shot relative to path of ball prior to shot on imaginary clock, given direction of ball prior to shot as 12:00 on imaginary clock; example, 1.5 means 1:30, ball shot at 45 degree angle to right relative to direction of ball prior to shot. C: horizontal coordinate of ball impact in feet; 1= just inside left goalpost, 24=just inside right goalpost. D: vertical coordinate of ball impact in feet; 1= ball rolling on ground to impacting 1 foot above ground; 8=ball immediately under crossbar. E: distance from point of shot to impact on goal target in paces (1 pace=0.67 meters). F: apex height of ball during flight in feet. G: swerve of ball right or left during flight; example, r3 means ball swerved 3' to right, l2 means ball swerved 2 feet to left ( the lowercase L looks like a number 1). H: number times ball bounced before hitting target, r means ball was rolling on ground. I: spin of ball, r = clockwise spin, l=counterclockwise spin. J: flight time of ball in seconds from foot impact on ball to time of ball impact on wall target. K: part of foot ball was struck with, lf=left foot, rf=right foot. L: average speed of ball during flight. M: max speed of ball during flight. N: maximum flight time of ball if shot would undoubtedly have been a goal given goalie as standing in middle of goal at time of shot.  O: a rough ratio indicating how close the ball came to being unstoppable, 101=unstoppable; this number is the number in col N divided by the number in col J; note that this number can be over 101 even if the ball was not on target on the goal. P: Would the goalie undoubtedly have been beaten by the shot if he was in the middle of the goal at the time of the shot?; the answer here can be yes even if the shot was not on target, meaning the goalie would not have been able to stop the ball. Q: would the shot undoubtedly have been a goal? R: This is the angle in column B multiplied times the speed in col M; example, the clockwise angle 1:30 translates to 45 degrees, then the result of 45 times the mph in M gives the number in S; this number reflects angular power.

June 17 Morning Practice, 6:15 AM - 720 AM

Understanding the table:\See June 16 Entry, table cols have the same meaning as they did yesterday.Today the preliminary air dribble was about five times as good as the previous two days. Today I did not feel sleep-deprived or tired, as the practice started six hours after I woke up at midnight. Yesterday June 16, when I started practice I had been awake for 14 hours when the practice started at 6:20 AM. June 14, when I started practice I had been awake for 19 hours. Today I only slept for 3 hours from 9-midnight prior to the practice, but it made a big difference. Feels like I am on the verge of finally mastering the difficult preliminary air dribble involving slanting to the right on kicks with the right foot, whereas yesterday mastering it seemed a million miles away. Today the air dribble started 31 paces away from the goal, the total distance covered by the air dribble on average was about 8 meters. I was putting alot of backspin on the ball on the air dribble today, keeping the ball low, there were long fast runs (the directional pattern of the drill today naturally produced shorter runs in terms of distance from start to shot point). On the shot also, this morning was excellent, seeing that I am left footed and have had little practice shooting with my right foot. Today was about the the third day of me having an improved attitude accepting my mistakes as a natural part of the learning process, and noticing the good qualities of the runs that were marred by mistakes. You can see looking at the results today, how counting every shot from the very beginning of practice makes me look worse than I really am, as you can see how the second half of the practice excelled the first half. Yesterday when I walked into the Bank of America Office a clerk saw me and scoffed at Christiano Ronaldo. It's beginning to look like I really will end up excelling him. I was just aiming for the goal in general, not any specific part of the goal today (same the previous days); it really does look like I have a subconsious natural tendency to shoot for the corners and the edges of the goal (plausible seeing I started playing soccer at age 6).

June 18 Practice

T4= 4th touch of run, T3= 3rd touch of run, etc. R in bounce column means ball was a roller.

The preliminary air dribble pattern today was like a U turn, starting going away from the goal and then turning towards the goal. a 90 degree turn to the right was made through the 4th touch of the run,  which set the ball moving towards the goal, and then the ball was shot in what was usually roughly a straight ahead direction.  I was surprised that the shooting was not as good as yesterday as I am left footed. The past few days have all involved the ball moving sideways towards the sideline at the time it was shot. Beyond the past few days, the past few weeks have featured a disproportionately large number of sideways shots because I have been shooting from around the clock from every angle equally. Thus I have gotten used to the sideways type of shot, and the art of shooting straight ahead has become rusty. The distance between the shot point and the goal was greater today than it was yesterday. Today more of the shots were hitting the middle of the goal than has been the case in the past, which indicates that since my shots are beginning to go where they are intended to go, it is getting close to time to consciously and deliberately aim not for the middle of the goal but for the edges and corners of the goal. Today on shot #40 for the first time in memory I caught myself deliberately aiming for the edge of the goal, shot #40 did in fact hit the lower right corner of the goal and would have been unstoppable if the goalie had started out in the middle of the goal. The preliminary air-dribble today covered about 14 meters in its twisting and turning way and was very sharp, with backspin on the ball, the ball kept low, sharply angled turns, a high speed level, and a low error rate. Yesterday and today the air-dribble has been much better than it ever has been in the past. This I find to be associated with my learning to accept mistakes as a natural part of the learning process. Though the shooting today was disappointing and it was a big surprise that I have developed into such a good broadside shooter compared to my shooting straight ahead, overall today was one of my best days ever as it signalled that finally after several weeks of frustration, I am beginning to master the ultra-difficult air dribble that I set out to master, which involves slanting the ball to the right with the right foot (I am left footed). When this air dribble is mastered I will have no weaknesses at all on the air dribble and be able to cut in or cut out with both feet on the air-dribble, meaning I will be basically unstoppable.  Just as I expected, the work on the difficult cut to the right with the right foot during the air-dribble, has produced fast improvement in terms of shooting with the right foot. At the same time it has allowed the left foot skills to become a little rusty. The air dribble pattern I've been adhering to features touches with the right foot on T2 and T3 and touches with the left on T4 and T5. Many of the runs have ended before T5 was even possible. Often the fifth touch of the run with the left foot has involved the ball being in a very unusual position compared to what has recently become the case what with improvement on the air dribble.  Seems whereas yesterday there was good luck, today there  was bad luck what with lots of balls just barely missing the goal area. Again today you can see how the results would look better if I did not count in the results everything that happens from the very beginning of practice.  Today computationally 13% of the shots would have goals, unstoppable by the goalie, but this fails to take into account problems caused for the goalie by the ball swerving  left and right.  Above and beyond the number of shots that would have been impossible for the goalie to stop and were on target, there are the shots that goalies can stop but cannot catch, meaning that the ball rebounds into the playing area, which can have disastrous consequences for the defense.
