Michelle
Abram
On October 22, 2008, this
genealogist's birthday, Michelle Abram put the
following
post up on her myspace page, about a
recurring dream she has been having:
"I have been having these dreams of
late, always with a white animal, a lynx/ocelot
or ferret or something, but always white.
Innocence/death I don't know what culture to
ascribe it too. If I were more superstitious I
might think it was the soul of my little
brother, but I am not, and alas he is dead and
not a white rodent. Or feline. Never
was".

of Mr Johnson:
Ms.
Johnson + Mr. Dobbs (his mother was a
wagner)
A living Mr. Dobbs (who I estimate is
'Dobbsman' the owner of the tree), whose mother
is a Wagner, has two sons named Mr. Dobbs,
via his marriage to a Ms Johnson. Hence the name
of the tree. Dobbsman's wife Ms Johnson, is
the daughter of Mr. Johnson, who is the son
of Ms (maiden name) Kilmer, who was the daughter
of Iven W Kilmer, who was the son of Mary Jane
McCaig. Mary Jane McCaig's brother James Melvin,
was the father of Albert Ernest McCaig who was
the father of the mother of David Virgil Hobbs.
Dobbsman's wife (maiden name) Johnson, is the
great-granddaughter of Iven W Kilmer, who was a
cousin of my grandfather Albert E

@3D:H
"The Centralia Journal 30 September
1927...Mr. McCaig was a man of variable industry. He could do many
things and his hands were rarely idle. As a pioneer, he turned the
virgin soil of the prairie home, he tilled the soil, he owned his
home...Working at the task of making a living he served the
interests of his home and his family and reared them, a large family
in love and affection for each other, and for him. Into their home
life, their social home life, he entered with considerable zest, and
in his undemonstrative religious way raised them as it were in the
fear of God and in the nurture of Christianity. Through integrity,
purposefulness, strength and ruggedness of human character he
achieved much... Strong in his likes and dislikes, he lived the
comparatively well balanced life. Strong charactered, he built life
on morality’s fine base, and with honor unsullied, and heart
sincere, he thought religion was more “to be what one seemed” than
to profess very much. However he has ever been a member of some
church, and since 1911 a mem- ber of the Congregational church in
this city. He did the tasks and duties as son, husband and father in
the fashion necessary to carry well the responsi-
bilities...Conscious to the last...he feared not, for when God would
call he was ready. And the man who says, that he is ready and
prepared by love and faith and human merit, that man is no coward,
but brave and courageous in the man- hood that ever blesses the
world... Working, struggling, overcoming, achieving, seeing his
family grow up and find places of human usefulness in the world...a
host of warm hearted feel- ing friends...truthfully say, “this man
gone will be missed in the city much,” but missed in the home most;
for a good man, a fine citizen, an honest upright worthy christian
char- acter has gone away... Reverends J. H. Cone and J. E. Mc-
Clain officiating...Transcribed by Earl Hoffman September
2008".

Mr Burge
father of Tracy
Lynn Clem in 2I
+
Bonnie Jane
Clem
(1944, Atchison
KS-
1997, Kansas City,
MO)
Mr. Burge, father
of Ms Clem in 2I is the probable author
of the
Burge family tree. Bradley Shumaker's
(2I)
mother's mother was
Hazel Elizabeth Yarger, whose mother was Laura
Frances Mccaig, a
sister of Albert Ernest Mccaig, who was the father
of
the mother of David
Virgil Hobbs. Thus re Ms Burge's husband Bradley
Shumaker: Bradley
Shumaker's grandmother was a cousin of
the
mother of David Virgil
Hobbs.
A trick at
ancestry.com I discovered, is that
sometimes,
the full name of a
living
person is not given,
but the full name of the living person's spouse is
given. Therefore if the
full name of a living person is not listed with
the
info for that living
person, you can find the full name in the info
for
the person's spouse.
Weird. So score another hack for me.
Will
ancestry.com learn of
the hack and take
action? |

Family Tree
A living
Ms Penner, whose mother was a Thiessen and whose
father was a Penner, was married to Mr. Robert
Stanley McCombs, whose mother was a Bennett. Mrs
Penner McCombs has a son Mr. (Larry, I guess,
owner of this tree) McCombs who married a Ms
Seamster, and also married a Ms Cragen through
whom he has a daughter Ms McCombs. Hence the
name of the tree. The grandfather of Larry
McCombs, was Winfred Grover McCombs, whose
father Caleb Mosier McCombs, was the brother of
Julia Etta McCombs, who was the mother of Albert
Ernest McCaig, who was the father of Helen
McCaig mother of David Virgil Hobbs. Thus, the
grandfather of Larry McCombs owner of this page,
was the cousin of Albert E McCaig grandfather of
David VIrgil
Hobbs. |

1. 'Haysville Houses'
poem by
David Virgil Hobbs
Haysville Kansas, population nine
thousand,
Ninety five percent white
population,
Forty five thousand median household
income
Is a grid of about two hundred fifty
Boxes wide as one and as long as
three
Hundred yard long, fifty yard wide football
fields,
Each bordered by ten yard wide gray
concrete streets
Each lot contains two about fifteen house
rows,
Each with their green lawns facing the
road,
And their backyards facing the
backyards,
Of the houses in the other
row.
The houses are rectangular in
form
Same width as a basketball court for
basketball
And deep as half the width of a
basketball court
The front lawns are the width of a
court for basketball,
And as deep as half the length of a
basketball court.
The backyards are wide as a court for
basketball,
And as deep as the length of a basketball
court.
So royally enormous you could get
lost
In the basketball court sized green
backyard at night
Wandering carefree drinking with
a fun one
Far from the roads, enjoying the peace and
quiet
The yards are big enough so
that if things go wrong
There's enough land so plenty of food
can be grown
The average distance walk to the
nearest street
From a house is two hundred and twenty five
feet;
Looks like hicks living like
millionaires
On just an
average household income,
To the urban living in
apartments
Just half the width of the width of the
houses of Haysville,
And half as deep as the depth of those of
the Haysville hicks,
Apartments just a third the size of the
Haysville homes,
Apartments with backyards an eighth the
size of
The backyards of the
majestic Haysville houses,
And the yard shared with the apartment on
the other floor.
@2010 David Virgil
Hobbs
Note 2. Michelle Abram
ctd
Something about this photo of Michelle
Abram, made me think of this song by the Rolling Stones
entitled, "Sing this
All together". To me Michelle looks like the smart deep
rebellious type that once was the wife of a Rolling Stone.
A living Ms (maiden name) Abram (I estimate
this to be Michelle Abram), is or was, married to a Mr.
Martone; they have a son named Mr. Martone. Ms Abram's mother
is a Ms (maiden name) McCaig whose father is a Mr. McCaig,
whose father was an Arthur McCaig, whose father was an Edwin
Lynn McCaig, whose father was a William U McCaig, whose father
was a Robert McCaig married to an Elizabeth Isenberg. Robert
McCaig's son James Melvin was the father of Albert Mccaig, who
was the father of the mother of David Virgil Hobbs. Thus,
Edwin Lynn Mccaig was the cousin of Albert Mccaig; Ms
Abram-Martone's grandfather's grandfather, was the cousin of
Albert Mccaig my grandfather.
It took some typically Herculean Solomonid
detective work on the part of this genealogist, to discover
the Michelle Abram that is the author of the Abram tree. This
genealogist did a google search for the name of the father of
the father of her son combined with the last town that he
lived in (revealed in the ancestry.com tree as he is
deceased). This led to a name of a son for the deceased
gentleman; this son was Matthew James Martone, the father
of Ms Abrams' son. A search for Matthew James Martone led to
an obit for his mother and the pieces began to fall together
(this is all the genealogist's personal opinion of the
facts). Moral of the story: you can get clues re a
mysterious person who is related to you, by looking at not
just the relations you have in common, but also the relations
of the mysterious person who are not related to you,
particularly obituaries.

re family trees studied Jan

Trusty produced good info
Lambertsen produced good
info
Mclaren does not go past Anna
Minerva
does not go past anna
minerva
Manchester tree had photos, fizzled out
at generation H
Taylor tree shows lots
of descendants and siblings for mary ann mccaig, plowed
through them all.
Kenworthy adds info re john davis barr,
who was a son of william h barr, through all possible
relations
Barr family tree adds info re earl

Did not study one world ancestry tree
carefully.
Towards the end, doing the barr and
kenworthyy trees, did not check the persons in family tree view for
second marriages that might hide kids
Did a lot of poking around for people
like scharnell shupp and milledge, found some interesting leads but
nothing definitive.

Isenberg Homestead. Built in 1768 by Gabriel
Isenberg b. 1720, in Clemsonville MD. Gabriel Isenberg was the
father of persons listed in 4A and 6A.
The names that are very often used as first names
amongst the ancestors and descendants of Gabriel b. 1720, are:
Enoch, and Gabriel.
It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven
without dying--"he disappeared, because God took him." For before he
was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.
"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent
from God into a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, (27) to a virgin
betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And
the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in to her and
said:
"Hail, one receiving grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women...Do not fear, Mary, for you have found
favor with God. And behold! You shall conceive in your womb and bear
a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great and
shall be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give
him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the
house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no
end...The Holy Spirit shall come on you, and the power of the
Highest shall overshadow you. Therefore also that Holy One which
will be born of you shall be called Son of God. And behold,
your cousin Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age. And this
is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God
nothing shall be impossible".

Notes |
Note 1 re
6C :
Possible decendants of John Henry
Isenberg:
According to Jesse Isenberg's book the
following children of John Henry Isenberg, made the following
migrations:
Nicholas
Henry
Enoch
Gabriel
(above 3 moved from Double Pine Creek, MD to
Huntingdon County PA, 1808)
Peter
Susanna Isenberg
(-1822, Huntingdon County, PA)
(above 3 moved from Double Pine Creek, MD to
Huntingdon County PA, 1808)
He also records John Henry Isenberg as having four
unnamed daughters:
unnamed female 1
unnamed female 2
unnamed female 3
unnamed female 4
Huntingdon Daily News, September 26, 1946: Jesse M Isenberg, of 206 6th Street, told the Daily News,
that according to his interpretation a book about the history
of the Isenberg family: John Henry Isenberg and his brother Peter
emigrated from Germany to the US; John Henry was the father of 5
boys and 5 girls; 4 of the boys, Nicholas, Henry, Enoch, and
Gabriel, moved from Double Pipe Creek, Maryland, to Huntingdon
County in 1780, and another of the boys, Peter, and his sister
Susannah, did not make the move until 1808; an inscription found on a tombstone that
had been covered over by weeds was the inscription of Susannah, a
sister of the boys who did not make the move until 1808.
Jesse M Isenberg of 206 6th St. in describing the children of
John Henry Isenberg, and Families of Dave & Karen in
describing the siblings of John Henry Isenberg, both describe a
group of ten siblings, if an eleventh, John Henry Isenberg,
described by Families of Dave & Karen as
an eleventh sibling, is considered a parent of the group and
not a sibling of the group; they both describe a group of five
boys and five girls if the eleventh JH Henry is left out; they both
include in the group boys named Nicholas, Enoch and Gabriel; they
both include in the group a girl named Susannah.
The news report describing Jesse Sullivan's theory and
book, could mean that: 1--Jesse M Isenberg of 206 6th St.,
misidentified the siblings of John Henry Isenberg as the children of
John Henry Isenberg, whereas Families of Dave & Karen &
ancestry.com is correct and the persons in question
are actually the siblings and not the children of John Henry
Isenberg; 2-- Jesse M Isenberg correctly identifies the
persons as the children of John Henry Isenberg and Families of Dave & Karen is
wrong; 3-- they are both right, and John Henry Isenberg gave
his children the same names as his siblings had.
For now I assume that option 3 in the above paragraph is
correct.
The situation is complicated because this family at this
time, featured persons giving their children the same names as
the names given by their siblings to their children; persons giving
their children the same names as their parents grandparents and
uncles.
Jesse M Isenberg and his interpretation of his book of
Isenberg history, and Families of Dave & Karen apparently disagree on a number of facts regarding John
Henry Isenberg. But at least I'm aware of Jesse M
Isenberg having had an important book.
Note 2 re controversy re cell 7B, what was
the pedigree of David Isenberg b. 1796, father of Elizabeth Isenberg
b. 1823?
According to what I call the mainstream (oneworldtree, Burge family tree, Dobbs Wagner family tree, Abram family tree), the father of
Elizabeth Isenberg, David b. 1796, was the son of Enoch b. 1800 who
was the son of John George b. 1747; according to Hoffman, David b. 1796 was the son of
Gabriel b. 1794 who was the son of John Henry b. 1753, who was the
brother of John George. Both of these theories are untenable for
obvious reasons: a man born in 1796 cannot be the son of a man born
in 1800; and, a man born in 1796 cannot be the son of a man born in
1794.
According to my analysis, David b. 1796 was the
man recorded as Joseph b. 1796 (or a brother of Joseph b. 1796), who
was the son of Enoch b. 1761; this Enoch was the
brother of John George b. 1747 and John Henry b. 1753.
There is a huge amount of room for massive
confusion regarding the ancestry of David Isenberg b.
1796.
John Henry b. 1752, had a son named Gabriel b.
1794, and John George b. 1747 had a son named Gabriel also.
Nicholas b. 1757 had a son named Enoch b. 1786,
and John George had a son named Enoch b. 1800.
John Henry b. 1753, and John George b. 1747, had
brothers named Gabriel b. 1755 and Gabriel b. 1761.
The father of John George, his brother John Henry
etc. was Gabriel b. 1720, whose father was Enoch b
1689.
Thus plenty of possibility of error.
Seems what I call "the mainstream" looked at the
charts, looking for a father of David named Enoch, who was an Enoch
who had a brother named Gabriel, and settled on Enoch b. 1800
who had a brother named Gabriel, and whose father was John George,
instead of correctly identifying Enoch b. 1761, who also had a
brother named Gabriel and was the brother of John George, as Enoch
the father of David b. 1796.
Apparently Hoffman somehow confused
David__Gabriel__John Henry__Gabriel__Enoch, his idea of the truth,
with David__Enoch__Gabriel__Enoch which I consider to be the truth.
Perhaps Hoffman will explain how he made the mistake.
Regardless of the opinion regarding the exact
ancestry of David b. 1796 father of Elizabeth, what all the opinions
agree on is that David b. 1796 was either the grandson (my opinion)
or great-grandson (mainstream, Hoffman) of Gabriel b. 1720.
Rowan in his family tree, does not
show any David descended from Gabriel b. 1720, he does not show an
Elizabeth b. 1823, he does not show any Mccaigs including the Robert
Mccaig b. regarding whom the consensus is that he married Elizabeth
Isenberg. But he does identify himself as descended from a grandson
of Gabriel b. 1720.
Burge shows no references for david b. 1796 but
for elizabeth b. 1823 he shows a census report that contradicts his
idea of a marriage with robert mccaig; dobbs wagner shows no
references to evidence re his history of david and elizabeth;
abram shows no references for his history of david or
elizabeth. dobbs wagner and burge show children for david b.
1796 through two different marriages. dobbs wagner and burge list
david's children as all having changed their name to isenberger from
isenberg, except for elizabeth. abram shows only one child for
david.

"It's been 47 years since Bob Lane,
former Seattle Times reporter,
picketed (in 1953) at 1120 John St.,
the official address of The
Seattle Times. Bob, then a 19-year-old
journalism student at the
University of Washington, subbed on the
picket line for his father,
Horace Lane, who then worked on The
Seattle Times copy desk...
"I dropped out of school for a quarter
and continued my job at a
food-processing plant in Snohomish
County," Bob said. He
recalled picketing a few times to give
his father a break from the
three- to four-hour shifts...Horace
Lane, a Times employee from
1941 through the mid-1960s, died in
1976...Bob took early retirement
from The Times to freelance for boating
and maritime publications.
His wife, Polly Lane, retired
from The Times’ business department

He is a member of National Honor

he plans to attend Carl Sandburg

"GALESBURG — As Richard Kowalski
watched Garry Barton speak to
a group of prominent contributors
at Knox College, he was impressed
by the young man’s poise...Kowalski
made it a point to exchange
numbers with the George Washington Gale
Scholar before parting ways
that night. “He came across as being
bright, articulate,” said Kowalski, the
president and CEO at OSF St. Mary
Medical Center. “I thought, ‘There’s
somebody who could be a good, potential
intern.’” He was proven right
the following summer. Throughout the
internship, Kowalski exposed Barton
to as many aspects of the
hospital as possible...He (Garry) will become the
first person in his family to
earn a bachelor’s degree... He...has been
accepted into Bradley University’s
master’s program in business administration
and will live with his fiancee in the
fall. ... And his brother, Aaron...followed
Garry into the program five years ago
and enters his second year at CSC this fall
. ... Their parents, Tammy and Garry
Sr., have always pushed academics on
them. This plays a large role in
a scholar’s success, according to Knox College
President Roger Taylor. “It’s
critical,” he said. “Garry’s parents are very supportive
of him. Three-fourths of the time
students drop out (of the program), it’s because
of a lack of encouragement from
home.” “He’s (Garry) an excellent, conscientious
student and focused academically,” said
John Spittell, a professor of business
management at Knox who
accompanied the students. ... During his time at
St. Mary Medical Center...Kowalski
included him occasionally on meetings
with board members...a...important
aspect was his weekly scheduled meeting
with Kowalski. In those meetings,
Kowalski told him of the importance of a
master’s degree if he wanted to enter
medical administration, a field Barton
is now interested in. ... Garry
Barton:...GPA (CSC): 4.0 GPA (Knox College):
3.91...Activities: Business Club, TRIO,
volunteers at Boys & Girls Club of Knox
County • Up next: Pursuing master’s
degree at Bradley University in business
"Grab opportunities, work hard and
you'll be successful," said Knox
College student and Gale Scholar Garry
Barton, in remarks to the
newest class of Gale Scholars at the
(2009) induction ceremony"

Surprising thing is that Vada
Calkins-Barton (7.5-F), not listed in the Penner/Thiessen family
tree as having any grandchildren or great-grandchildren, shows up
in
an obituary recorded by Mccombs
the author of the tree, as having 17 grandchildren and 23
great-grandchildren.
The Penner/Thiessen tree gives the
impression that Vada Calkins-Barton's four children did not
marry or have children, because what it says regarding them
is:
"Spouse & Children No Spouse
or Children"; either that or it lists a spouse but does not list
children for any of them.
Vada Calkins-Barton is one of the 43
grandchildren the Penner/Thiessen family tree lists as produced by
the siblings of Albert Mccombs b 1814, and husband of
Phoebe Mosier.
If each of these 43 were to have gone
on to have 8.5 grandchildren each (half the number Vada
Calkins-Barton had), the 43 would end up having 365 grandchildren
in total.
However as it is, the Penner/Thiessen
table only lists 10 grandchildren as produced by the Vada
Calkins-Barton generation (7.5-H of this table).
If the 43 siblings were to have had
grandchildren at merely an approx zero population growth rate of 4
grandchildren per person, they would have had 172
grandchildren (each person has
four grandparents).
So it appears that the Penner/Thiessen
table only lists between 1% and 6% of the grandchildren of the Vada
Calkins-Barton generation.
Albert Mccombs b. 1814 and his siblings
all started out in New York state. Albert ended up in Nemaha county
Kansas, married to Phoebe Jane Mosier. His sister Rhoda
Ann ended up in Oneida Il, Rhoda Ann's
daughter ended up in Galesburg Il, and Rhoda Ann's granddaughter
Vada Calkins-Barton ended up in Galesburg Il.

According to Malone/Betts/Wright and Lyman Albert
Bixby: Family trees:
William Palmer (Malone Betts Wright tree) Wlliam Palmer
(Lyman Albert Bixby tree) (William Palmer is not listed by
the Beckwith or the RDK trees) Birth 6 Nov 1694 in

Charlotte, Dutchess, New York, USA + Rachel
Fowler Birth 1702 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island,
USA Death 1780 in , Westchester, New York, USA
The parents of William Palmer b. 1694
were:
William Palmer (Malone Betts Wright tree) William Palmer (Beckwith tree) (This William Palmer is not listed by lyman albert bixby
or RDK trees) Birth 1654 in Newtown, Queens, New York, United
States Death 1723 in Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut,
United States + Mary Tyler Birth 1662 in Milford, New
Haven, Connecticut, United States Death 1693 in Milford, New
Haven, Connecticut, United States
William Palmer, b. 1654
in Newtown, NY, a direct ancestor of David Virgil Hobbs, was a
direct descendant of French, Frankish, Holy Roman, and Norman
royalty through six different branches of his ancestry. He was also
descended from a canonized Roman Catholic saint. Through each branch
his descent from royalty or sainthood was direct.
See note 10
this section, re whether being descended from royalty is actually
anything special.
According to the Beckwith tree, William
Palmer b. 1654 was descended from Thomas Palmer, b. 1508,
Parham England, husband of Catherine Stradling. According to
the RDK-FTM-23 tree, Thomas Palmer b. 1508,
husband of Catherine Stradling b 1512, had many royal ancestors
going back over 1200 years.
Beckwith shows, Thomas
Palmer b. 1508, father of John b. 1544, father of William b. 1587,
father of William b. 1616, father of William b. 1654. RDK shows,
Thomas Palmer b. 1508, father of John Palmer b. 1544, father of
Walter Palmer b. 1585, for whom no siblings are listed.
Beckwith, for William b. 1587, lists eleven siblings including
Walter b. 1585. This is another example of how some
genealogists ignore the siblings of a person who is focused on
because the focused on person is in the line that is directly
related to the genealogist in question.
In relation to
a French/Frankish dynasty, he was directly descended from
Louis IV (b 920) King of
France, Emperor Charles the Bald (b
823) Holy Roman Emperor and King of West Francia, and Charlemagne (b 742) King of
the Franks & Holy Roman Emperor. He was a direct descendant
of Judith de France Queen
of Wessex (b 844), daughter of Charles the Bald (b 823), in one
branch of his ancestry and a direct descendant of King Louis the Stammerer (b 846) son of the same King Charles the Bald (b
823), through another branch of his ancestry (this double descent
from the same dynasty is found twice in his
line).
He was a direct descendant of
Charles Martel (b 688) Duke
and Prince of the Franks, and of Saint Arnulf (b. 582), a
canonized Roman Catholic Saint, through another branch of his
ancestry.
Through yet another branch of
his ancestry, he was a direct descendant of William the Conqueror (b 1027) King of England, via the Conqueror's daughter Adela's
marriage to Stephen II of Blois. Adela was the mother of Stephen King of England (b 1096), also a direct ancestor of William Palmer. Adela,
or 'Saint Adela', feast day February 24, is one of the
ten thousand or so canonized saints of the Roman Catholic
Church.
RE Mary Tyler wife of William Palmer b.
1654, there used to be a TV show called the Mary Tyler Moore Show, that ran back in the 1970s when Americans could relax. I
think the theme song
(rhapsody version) for this show, by Sonny Curtis, was a
great piece of music.
Beckwith lists siblings for
William Palmer b 1654:
Martha Palmer 1616 – 1701 William
Palmer 1638 – 1653 Susannah Palmer 1640 – 1727 Ephraim
Palmer 1648 – 1684 John Palmer 1652 – 1673 Judith Palmer

siblings) James Palmer 1656 – 1717 Joseph Palmer 1656 –

a good search
This tree does not, as do most
sources, show the father of the famous revolutionary
war hero Lt John Mosher (4B), as being a son of John
William Mosher the son of James Mosher b. 1675. Neither does
the Register Report - Mosher by Behling. The Lyman tree does
show a son of James Mosher b. 1675 by his wife Mary
Davol, a William Mosher b. March 24, 1715 as married to
Margaret Wood and fathering 12 children, starting with Silas
Rhody and Sarah.
The Mosher Hull Bishop tree
is a superior if imperfect tree. It shows that James
Mosher, b. 1675, had two similar children, one named William
b. March 24, 1715, and another named John b. August
13, 1715. The one named John, is usually known in the
various sources as John William. The one named William,
married a Margaret Wood, and had 12 children, starting with
Silas, Rhody, and Sarah; this the Lyman Albert Bixby tree
agrees with. The one named John, married Mary
Davol and had 10 children, starting with Mary, John
the war hero (4B), and James. This agrees with:
the Origin and History of the Mosher
Family compiled by
William C Mosher, A.M. Alhambra CA 1898; other trees found by
the Hannah warren search; and, Genealogical and family history of western
New York by William Richard
Cutter (1912).
I conclude that the Lyman Albert
Bixby tree, omitted John William b. August 13, 1715, who was
the father of the war hero Lt. John born February 9, 1744.
This may have been because the authors of the tree or sources
they relied on, were confused by the similarity between the
William b. 1715 and the John William b. 1715. As for the
impossibility of John William being born less than
five months after William, according to Cutter, William
was born not in 1715, but November 9, 1712, via James' earlier
wife Tosh. According to Mosher (1898), William was born in
1713 via James' earlier wife Tosh. The two children having
similar names and born at almost the same year is the probable
source of the confusion re the birth date of William.
5 The painting below, by
Trumbull, shows the death of General Joseph Warren
at Bunker Hill. The General died in the arms of
Captain John Mosher (4B), who was a cousin of the grandfather
of David Virgil Hobbs' grandfather's grandmother.
Captain Mosher's heroics during the war are further described
below the painting. |
|
|
|
|
In painting above, General Joseph
Warren dies in the arms of Captain John Mosier at Bunker Hill.
Captain Mosher had two brothers, Abijah b.
1749, who was a revolutionary war soldier, and David b.
1752. Ironically, although General Joseph Warren was
born in Roxbury MA and graduated from
Harvard College, David Virgil Hobbs, a
Harvard graduate, could not get a job at
Harvard, and faced fierce opposition in his attempts to find
employment, from black personnel officers of the type that now
occupy Roxbury MA. After the pudgy light-skinned black
Harvard personnel officer interviewed Hobbs, he filled the
Harvard computers with fierce criticism of Hobbs (Hobbs
was informed of this by white staff at the personnel office).
Then Hobbs called to speak with the supervisor of the man who
interviewed him, a black female. The supervisor was not in
town. Her assistant, another black female, spoke with
Hobbs for about 5 seconds, simply notifying him
that her boss was out of town. Then, although she had
only spoken with Hobbs for 5 seconds or so, she proceeded to
fill the Harvard computers with a repeat of what the man
who originally interviewed Hobbs had written into the
computers (white staff at the Harvard personnel office
notified Hobbs of this also).
Importance and Heroics of Captain
John Mosier during the revolutionary war:
Captain John Mosher's wife Hannah
Warren (1753-1795) was a first cousin of General Joseph
Warren, killed at battle of Bunker Hill. William her father,
b. 1724, was a minuteman in John Nutting's company, and
descended from Arthur Warren, who settled in Weymouth in
1645, and who was a lineal descendant of William Earl of
Warren, a norman baron of Danish descent, who
accompanied William the Conqueror, played an important role in
the battle of Hastings, and married Gundreda,
fourth daughter of William the conqueror.
Captain John Mosher
commanded a company of infantry during the revolutionary war
and fought in 9 battles, including Lexington, Concord, Bunker
Hill, Brandywine, and Monmouth.
"Lt Mosher...retreated...to a
spot near Merritt's tavern, where he formed his men in a solid
body, or hollow square, with fixed bayonets. They were ordered
not to fire a shot but to receive the enemys charge in silence
until further instructions. At the first charge the Tory
officer, finding himself repulsed, called to Mosher to
surrender or he would cut his party in pieces. Mosher's reply
was one of defiance. Another charge was made and sustained in
the same manner. But after the third attack, the Americans
were ordered to fire on the retiring troops, which they did
with terrible effect, killing ten men and dangerously wounding
eighteen others, among them Capt. Kipp...Mosher's
men...escaped...not having a man even wounded...this is said
to have been the most astonishing feat...enacted during the
whole (revolutionary) war. General Washington often spoke of
the affair, and it was reported all over Europe to show the
utility of the bayonet, and that a small part of infantry thus
armed may successfully resist a strong body of cavalry (Mosher
gives as his source, "Earliest History, 1666-1875", by Charles
W Baird, p. 257-8).
Mosher started as a
lieutenant who was the defacto captain of his company
because the nominal captain was sick; he was later promoted to
captain.
"In July 1777, he (Lt John
Mosher) was sent by General Schuyler with a letter to tory
Butler at Oriskany...on his return he narrowly escaped being
killed and scalped by the Indians...one bullet was shot
through his hat and four through his coat...he (Lt John
Mosher) was put in command of a company of infantry with which
he joined Gen. Herkimer and marched to the relief of Fort
Stanwix, (now Rome NY) which was besieged by Gen St. Leger
with 1400 men, composed of British, Tories, and Indians. At
Oriskany, Gen. Herkimer fell into an ambuscade of Tories and
Indians and was defeated with the loss of 400 men. Gen
Herkimer was mortally wounded, and Capt. John Mosher assisted
to carry him off the battle field to a place of safety, but in
doing so he nearly lost his life at the hands of the
savages...he (now Capt John Mosher) joined a new expedition
under Gen. Benedict Arnold, and marched with him to the relief
of Fort Stanwix. By strategy and valor they defeated Gen. St.
Leger's army and relieved the fort."
"(Cpt John) Mosher was authorized
by the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, in 1775, to recruit a
company of foot soldiers...Mosher was at the head of his
company at Lexington Concord, and Bunker Hill, and when
General (Joseph) Warren (born in Roxbury MA, Harvard grad) was killed he fell
into Mosher's arms, who supported his head until he died.
Mosher had two brothers killed in this
battle.
"Josiah Mosher was an officer in
the Eigth Massachusetts Regiment, and ws in seven engagements
of the Revolutionary war. When his brother, Lieut. John
Mosher, was disabled in the battle of Monmouth he took command
of the company and marched with Washington to the Hudson, and
to the end of the war. He was a tall athletic man, and had an
intelligent and noble countenance".
7.
The true origin of the Moshers
listed in this table; getting to the truth re the rumors of a
Mosher who amassed a fortune in India
The Nicolais
and Weir
family trees, on the one hand, and the Mosher-Hull tree on the other, are the best representatives I know
of two different versions of the history of the ancestry of
James Mosher b. 1675, an ancestor I have in common with
Captain John Mosher of revolutionary war fame.
All the versions show for James
b. 1675, a grandfather b. December 19, 1596 in Somersetshire
England, who died in 1666.
The Nicolais and Wier versions
show this man as a Hugh (known in many accounts as Ensign
Hugh) Mosher; the Mosher-Hull version shows him as a Nicholas
Mosher. The Nicolais and Wier versions show him as a son of
Stephen and grandson of Hugh Mosher through Hugh Mosher's
marriage to Edith Crosse. The Mosher Hull version shows him as
a son of a Roger Moger via an Edith Crosse. The father of
Hugh/Nicholas (depending on the version), Stephen, according
to many accounts had a cousin who acquired enormous wealth in
India. The Mosher name and the Moger name are reported to
represent different ancestries, Mosher supposedly being
German, and Moger supposedly being Norman. Confusion and
conflict re ancestry throw things into a state of doubt and
unbelievability. Hence I wished to understand the conflict
between the various versions.
There are hundreds of family
trees at ancestry.com that include Edith Crosse b. 1555
Somersetshire England.
My idea of the truth synthesizing
the two points of view: the John Mosher of the Nicolais and
Wier versions and the John Moger of the Mosher-Hull version
are one and the same person;this Mosher/Moger married first
Ann, and through Ann had the sons John, Thomas, George,
Stephen and William spoken of by those who recount the vast
wealth obtained in India by Hugh a nephew of Stephen;
Mosher/Moger then married Edith Crosse and through her had
children Mary, Hugh, and John; Hugh b. Dec 19, 1596 was
the son of Stephen; this Hugh was was the same person as the
Hugh b. dec. 19 1596 who the Mosher Hull version incorrectly
identifies as being the son of Mosher/Moger.
Nicolais and Wier contradict
themselves by declaring Stephen Mosher b. 1572 to be a son of
Edith Crosse, because they list John b. 1567, and Thomas b.
1570, as born of Anne or 'wife other than Edith'; and, they
list William b. 1575, as born of Ann or of 'wife other
than Edith'. Thus they err, and Stephen was a son of Ann.
Stephen was born in 1572 which according to Nicolais is the
same year in which Edith married Mosher/Moger; as a result
Stephen was misclassified as of Edith when he was actually of
Ann. Nicolais inexplicably, lists 1572 as the date of the
marriage of Mosher/Moger to Edith Crosse, while at the same
time listing children born before and after Stephen b.
1572 as born of Ann.
Mosher-Hull shows Hugh b. 1579,
John b. 1590, and Nicholas b. 1596 as the children of Edith
Crosse through her marriage to Mosher/Moger, and does not show
any other children for Mosher/Moger.
Thus in actuality, Nicolais and
Weir show the history of the descendants of Ann, whereas
Mosher-Hull shows the descendants of Edith.
The Mosher-Hull tree authors,
looking at the children of the second wife of Mosher/Moger,
the children of Edith Crosse, see "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas b.
Dec 19, 1596, as a son of Mosher-Moger's second marriage with
Edith. Nicolais and Weir see Hugh/Nicholas b. Dec 19, 1596, as
a son of Stephen who was a son of Mosher-Moger's first
marriage with Ann.
The children of Mosher-Moger's
second marriage with Edith Crosse, were contemporaneous with
the grandchildren of Mosher-Moger's first marriage with
Ann.
The Mosher-Hull family tree
authors, or the sources they relied upon, being ignorant of
Mosher-Moger's first marriage to Ann, while being aware of his
second marriage to Edith, and also being aware of "Ensign"
Hugh/Nicholas b. Dec.19, 1596 being descended from
Mosher-Moger husband of Edith Crosse, identified "Ensign"
Hugh/Nicholas Dec 19, 1596-1666, as being a son of
Mosher-Moger via his second wife Edith Crosse.
In contrast, Nicolais and Wier,
being aware of Mosher-Moger's first marriage with Ann,
identified "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas b. Dec 19, 1596-1666, father
of Reverend Hugh Mosher b. 1633, as a son of Stephen, b. 1572,
who was a son of Mosher-Moger via his first marriage with
Ann.
The Mosher-Hull theory if true
would mean that "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas Mosher b Dec 19,
1596-1666, was born when his father was 50 and his mother was
41, at a time when his relatives were having children at a
much earlier age.
Bringing together the history in
Nicolais and Weir with the history in Mosher-Hull, you find
that if you assume Hugh Mosher and John Moger to be the same
person, the different approaches concur in that the children
of Mosher-Moger via Ann, are all born before his children via
Edith Crosse, and his children via Edith Crosse are all born
after his marriage to Edith Crosse.
The Nicolais and Weir histories
are aware of two marriages for Hugh-Mosher/John-Moger, whereas
the Mosher-Hull history is aware of only one marriage for John
Moger.
It would be something rather
natural, if the descendants of a man through one wife, were to
record the man's history differently compared to the
descendants through another wife.
And so you would get: the
descendants of Hugh-Mosher/John-Moger through his first wife
Ann, thinking of him as Hugh Mosher, whereas you would get his
descendants through his second wife Edith, recording him as
John Moger; the descendants through his first wife Anne,
recording him as born in Strasbourg France but the descendants
of his second wife Edith recording him as born in Cucklingham
England; those of his first wife Ann recording him as born in
1537 whereas those of his second wife Edith record him as born
Abt 1546; those of his first wife Anne recording him as dying
in Manchester England whereas those of his second wife Edith
record him as dying in Cucklingham England; those of his first
wife Ann calling a location Cucklington whereas those of his
second wife Edith call the location Cucklingham; those of his
first wife calling a grandson of his Stephen, whereas those of
his second wife call the same person a son named
Nicholas.
Apparently, in actuality, Hugh
Mosher was born in 1537 in Strasbourg France, married Ann in
1561 while still in Strasbourg when he was 24, then before or
after becoming known as John Moger, married Edith Crosse
in 1572 in Cucklington/Cucklingham England when he was 35, and
then died in Cucklington/Cucklingham Abt 1607 when he was 70.
Seems he had a tendency to prevaricate to his second family
regarding his age.
Looking at genealogies similar to
the Mosher genealogy c. 1600, you notice that families using
names like Nicholas, Hugh, and John, repeat the same names
over and over and combine two of the names together, as in,
Nicholas Hugh Mosher, or Hugh Nicholas Mosher.
If I assume that Mosher Hull
erred in considering "Ensign" Nicholas Hugh Mosher b. Dec 19,
1596 to be the son of Hugh Mosher/John Moger, whereas actually
he was the grandson of Hugh Mosher/John Moger, which is the
Nicolais and Weir version of it, the result is a nice fit
which produces a believable reality that synthesizes the
Mosher Hull theory with the Nicolais and Weir
theories.
Thus I conclude
that: the reality was that Hugh Mosher 1537-1602, of the
Nicolais and Weir histories, and the John Moger 1546-1612 of
the Mosher Hull history, were the same person; "Ensign"
Hugh/Nicholas Mosher b. 1596 was the son of Stephen b. 1572
who was the son of Mosher/Moger; the Mosher-Hull tree and
similar trees are wrong when they say that"Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas Mosher b. 1596 was the son of
Mosher/Moger; the Nicolais and Weir trees are correct in
declaring that "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas Mosher was the grandson
of Mosher/Moger; it is not correct that "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas
Mosher b. 1596, had no famous cousins such as the Hugh who
settled in Maine or the Hugh who became rich in
India.
I estimate the
following causes for the idea that "Ensign" Hugh/Nicholas
Mosher b. 1596 did not have three famous cousins, all named
Hugh: persons are not aware of Mosher/Moger's first
marriage to Ann; the unbelievable, fantastic amounts of wealth
reported for one of these cousins;the possibilities for fraud
when descendants and lawyers try to make money off rumors of a
right to inheritance created due to the wealth of a deceased
ancestor.
So I conclude
that the original Mosher/Moger ancestor of the persons listed
in this table, started out as a Mosher in Strasbourg France,
and then
emigrated to England. This concurs with Cutter (1912) who bases his
account almost verbatim on Mosher
(1898).
According to
Cutter and Mosher: Protestant Hugh Mosher started out in the
Alsace area of France near Strasbourg; by 1600 he and his
family had moved to England to escape persecution; in England
five sons of Hugh, William, John, Thomas, Stephen, and George
were in the silk business; Hugh the son of Stephen, known as
Ensign Hugh, was the father of Reverend Hugh, who was the
father of James b. 1675, who was the ancestor the war hero
Captain John Mosher and I have in common.
According to
Cutter Mosher and other authorities, the name Mosher derives
from German for Moss and Herr meaning Lord of the Moss.
Strasbourg is on the eastern border of France and the
southwestern border of Germany. At various times in history,
it has been part of French or German territory. It is 100
miles north of Switzerland, and 200 miles north of Italy.
Looking at the map, before reading the
Wikipedia article about Strasbourg and learning about
Strasbourg, Strasbourg seemed to me to be in more ways
than one the exact center of Europe.
8. Photo of the Mosher Brothers
described in 3.5 I table cell.
"US Navy Capt. Christopher Mosher
(3.5 I in table) stands with his parents, Bud and
Patricia Mosher of Pleasant Street (pembroke MA), and
his brother, Marine Col. Jeffrey
Mosher (3.5 I in table), who emceed the promotion ceremony.
These men have in common with David Virgil
Hobbs an ancestor named
JamesMosher. b. 1675. Look at these men and think of how
Hobbs struggles at the gym at the Waltham Y with his
soccer drills, sprinting the
width of the gym while keeping the ball off the ground but
close to the body touching it only with alternating feet
every three steps, while people
call him a star and compare him to the greatest players in the
world, while at the same time nobody offers to
help Hobbs. I betplenty of people would be surprised that
there are Moshers who look like this, given that I've never
heard of a pro athlete named Mosher.
9. Notes re Leroy E
Mosher
"At present Managing Editor of the Los Angeles
Times, (Leroy Eugene Mosher) was in 1857 taken by his
parents to the state of Kansas, where his mother died, on a
wild western prairie, when the boy was but eight years of age.
Soon after his mother's death, the lad was putout to live on a
farm and at the age of nine years was doing a man's work
behind the plow, as well as the usual boy's "chore work" in
addition. His pay for the first year was his board, and
schooling in the winter. The second year he was to get $5 per
month, but the pay never materialized...young Mosher soon
after his fourteenth birthday...enlisted in a Kansas cavalry
regiment (the 9th)...and at the age of fifteen was promoted
to..corporal...Mr. Mosher became one of the owners of the Los
Angeles Times (in 1889)...and in...1898, was made managing
editor, upon the entry of the paper's cheif owner,
General Harrison Gray Otis, into the military serrvice
in the war against Spain." --
Origin and History of the Mosher
Family
(1898)
"This gifted man and brilliant
journalist (Leroy E Mosher) died by his own hand on the sands of
the seashore at Santa Monica on the afternoon of February 23,
1904".
A book containing the poetry and prose
originally contributed by Leroy E Mosher to the Los Angeles
Times:
Leroy E Mosher ("Hank Wagoner") "the
Stranded Bugle" and Other Poems and Prose including "the
Eagle" (originally contributed to the Los Angeles Times)
together with an Introduction by General Harrison Gray
Otis and Personal Tributes from former associates and
co-workers of the Times Staff. With Portait. The Times-Mirror
Company, Los Angeles, 1905. Online versions: archive.org; Google Books.
I took a brief look at the
book. Mr. Mosher was disillusioned by what he saw as the
degeneration of American society c. 1900 compared to the civil
war days of about 40 years earlier. He was an admirer of the
Union side in the civil war and despised the dominance of
southerners in the congress in Washington DC. He was like a
melancholy American Kipling
(1865-1936). He correspnded with President Garfield. Methinks
he thought too highly of his own poetic ability and skill; but
his poem about the bugle has a haunting beauty to
it.
Excerpt from Mosher's
poem, "the stranded Bugle", the poem the book containing his
writings is named after (book this is taken from says "written
about 1877. Reprinted from The Aldine. Reproduced in many
different journals"):
...One eve, I, musing,
paced the sands That skirt a shore where sets the sun,
Where every ripple of the sea Is warm as kisses, love
to love; I listened to the droning waves The lace-like
waves which fret and lave The tinted shells upon the
beach. Among the jetsam washed ashore I found, deep in
a sea-weed bed, A bugle, with the rime of years
Corroded, tarnished, long since dumb. I paused, and,
wondering whence it came, Stooped down and took it from
the sand. Long, long before, I, young, had stood Where
armies gathered and advanced, Where sabers clanked and
trumpets blared, And I had been a bugler then. I
dipped the mouthpiece in the sea I dipped the bell into
the sea I washed its battered, brazen throat, Then
held to lip and flung a blast Out on the pulsing, starlit
air. The long-hushed bugle woke and rang A limpid
cadence long the shore, Which drifted out to sea, and came
In ripples back upon the waves. Which rocked its
echoes back and forth From cliff to cliff against the
crags Far up the heights, around and round As though
it pealed, " I m found, I m found!"...
To me, the bugle in
the poem reminds me of my brother when I am with him, my
brother who always wants my time but who I never have time
for. Even when we feel a brother is damned, we still have
feelings for him, see the innocent child in him, mourn his
damnation, and wish he were not damned, as St. Paul in the
Bible mourned the damnation of his beloved Jews.
10.
Is being descended from royalty really nothing
special because the majority is descended from royalty?
On the internet I have heard reports that
anywhere from 0.3% of Americans and 2% of British, to 50-100%
of Americans and British are descended from William the
Conqueror. Most of these reports seem to involve persons
simply repeating what they have heard somewhere. The reports
giving a very high percentage as descended from William the
Conqueror, are according to their own
admission, based upon an unrealistic assumption that
historically every woman in the nations and areas in
question, had an equal percentage probability of marrying
any given man. Actually, due to factors such as geography and
social class, such has not historically been the case. Most of
the reports do not give a source to refer to in order to
discover details of the reports that they mention.
The reports that 50-100%
etc. of Americans are descended from William the
Conqueror, take the thrill out of being descended from kings
like him, and make being descended from him kings like
him, nothing special (I realize it is possible the Conqueror
was actually not a respectable man).
Looking at the subject I gave it
my usual Herculean Solomonid effort, and came up with an
approach superior to that I have seen anywhere else in the
world so far as I can tell.
I went to the ancestry.com
website, and did a search
for family trees that contain someone born in England between
1068 and 1088 AD. This was based on the fact that 1068 AD is
when William the Conqueror began having children born in
England in the UK. In the trees returned by the
search, I determined if William the Conqueror was related
to the modern authors of the tree.
I looked so far at the first 50
results produced by the search. I found 10 family trees
of American or Canadian origin, that contained someone born in
England between 1068 AD and 1088 AD. I found that: 4 of
these trees contained William the Conqueror but showed
that the modern authors of the trees in question were not
descended from William the Conqueror; 4 of the trees did not
contain William the Conqueror; and 2 of the trees
contained William the Conqueror and established a direct
connection between him and the modern authors of the
tree. Signifantly, 40% of the trees, although they
contained William the Conqueror, did not establish any direct
connection between him and the modern authors of the tree.
Thus so far, 20% of the American
and Canadian trees that contain someone born in England
between 1068 AD and 1088 AD, show William the Conqueror as an
ancestor of the modern authors of the trees.
It would be reasonable to guess
that being descended from William the Conqueror is at least 5
times as common amongst those who put up ancestry trees on
ancestry.com which go back all the way to the time of the
Conqueror, as it is in the general population, because: those
with glamorous ancestries, especially those glamorous enough
to contain William the Conqueror, will be more likely to go to
the trouble of putting up a tree on ancestry.com; those who go
to the trouble of listing ancestors going 1000 years back,
will be more likely to have glamorous ancestors from 1000
years ago.
Beyond this, it would be
reasonable to guess, that half of the creators of these trees
either deliberately falsify their trees so as to include
William the Conqueror as an ancestor, or semi-intentionally
fudge the facts so as to list William the Conqueror as an
ancestor, through methods such as giving the benefit of the
doubt to assumptions that result in WIlliam the Conqueror
being listed as an ancestor.
Thus as of now my estimate is
that certainly less than 20% of Americans are descended
from William the Conqueror, and most probably, less than 2% of
Americans are descended from William the Conqueror.
