Drill WC06/10-P6.1-5T, Touch ball every step with changes of direction

P6.1-5T is an abbreviated version of P6.1 (P6.1 is described in the Sept 1 log entry this page). It involves the ball flipped up and kicked forward approx 4.5 feet on L1; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the right on R2; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the left on L3; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the right on R4; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the left on L5. All this is done with the ball off the ground. The blue and wiggly line in the graphic represents the curtain. The gray line represents the wall at the far side of the curtain. The ball is kept close to the body but off the ground the entire time. after a foot kicks the ball, that foot skips (two steps in a row). These skips are the only foot movement allowed between kicks.

Drill WC06/10-P6.1-5T-Reverse, Touch ball every step with changes of direction

P6.1-5T-Reverse is an abbreviated version of P6.1 (P6.1 is described in the Sept 1 log entry this page). It is the reversed, mirror image of P6.1-5T. It involves the ball flipped up and kicked forward with the right foot, approx 4.5 feet on R1; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the left with the left foot on L2; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the right with the right foot on R3; the ball kicked at a 90 degree angle to the left with the left foot on L4; the ball touched on R5.

Drills P6.1-5T-M, P6.1-5T-Rev-M,   P6.1-5T-M45, & P6.1-5T-Rev-M45,  are described in text and graphic here.

Understanding the stats table below: Stats are for me, David Virgil Hobbs.      R2/L2 Bod Pos: Whether the body was in an upright, medium or crouched position on the second kick of the run.       L1R1 Type: Whether I emphasized leg-power or body-power on the first kick of the runs. L means leg power emphasized; B=body power emphasized on first kick.       Style: AF1 means--during the kicks there is a deliberate attempt to involve all parts of the body in the kick.      Good Runs: total number of successful or 'good' runs during practice segment. A successful/good run involves: ball kept off ground from first to last touch; prescribed pattern of ball/footwork movement approximately adhered to.      Minutes: How many minutes it took to achieve the number of successful/good runs recorded. This does not count time lost due to interruptions etc.      Good Runs/Minute: The number of good runs divided by the number of minutes.      Pattern: The name of the pattern that was run during the segment, & a graphic of the pattern run during the segment.

Starting  11/5/10: Attempted to get up to 5 touches on each run. Style: AF1=maximize body-force, leg-force, and ankle-force on each run. T5 Runs= number of runs that extended to 5 touches, with footwork and angles correct up to the 5th touch. Pattern: Pattern executed.

In R2 Bod Pos Column, U means intent during run is that body be  upright on R2, and on kicks subsequent to R2 also.  M means intent during run is that body be in a medium-level crouched position during R2, and on kicks subsequent to R2 also

Some of the runs today were about 30 feet in length, faster than fast, with perfectly angled 90 degree turns on each touch, the turns being so perfcectly angled that the angles were better than what is commonly called perfect. This with the ball kept off the ground the whole time, the ball touched on every step, and a 90 degree turn made on every step.

2/20/11 Indoor Soccer with the Spanish Young Men

The Spanish young men took over half the gym for indoor soccer. I asked Jason, a Y-Staffer, what was up. He said they rented the gym for a certain time every week for a few weeks, for indoor soccer. He said I could play with them if I paid them $35. He said their chief was named "Junior". I went to the gym and asked to speak with Junior. He said I could play with them, but he evinced little interest in being paid the $35.

Junior & his crew were playing with a size 4 junior-sized ball, that was underinflated to the point of being like a pillow. I started out playing n0-hands-allowed goalie guarding the approx 4' x 4' goal, and defender in front of the goal.

Basically, the Spanish young men were unable to dribble the ball past me during the approx 60 minutes I played with them. They were also unable to score on me when I was playing no-hands-allowed goalie, unless I had become tired or they had acquired a one-man advantage in terms of number of players for some reason.

I made some good saves blocking some shots. My tactical error as no-hands-goalie: sometimes I lagged back to cover the goal instead of aggressively charging the man with the ball. Fact is, that in such games, if the goalie, who cannot use his hands, lags back to cover the goal, it can be impossible for the goalie to block a fast well-aimed shot from the point that is midway between the two goals. The opposing goals were separated from each other by only about 16 yards today, with five or six players on each team between the goals.

I succeeded in making some good passes, but some of the passes were intercepted. One problem impairing pass-accuracy for me, was the small sized under-inflated ball. Another was that my team-mates would call for the ball when they were not very open; them calling for the ball would alert the defense; me passing to the team-mates who called for the ball would result in the ball being intercepted.

I only engaged in one offensive dribbling charge the entire game. This charge was blocked by the opposing team.

Twice when while playing defense when I charged the ball, after my foot hit the ball, my body went flying through the air, spinning sideways like a rifled bullet, so that I landed on my back. I attribute this to the the fact that since the ball was soft, when my foot contacted the ball it just sort of sank into the soft pillow-like ball, result being that my foot got stuck and my body went flying. I feel that my body going flying in a fall like this with me emerging unhurt and not even winded, is a good sign.

Fact is, even if I was the best player in the world, I would need about five hours at least of playing offense in such games, before my world-class status would begin to shine through. I have been practising with a regulation size 5 adult size ball, inflated to 11.6 psi; whereas, the ball used in the game was small and very soft. I have been practicing drills of a type intended to apply to regulation size field eleven on eleven soccer games.

  3/15/11 @Y Gym -- L no AF1 -- 48 0.77 (0.65 see comments) P6.1-5t-NS

Number perfects not counted. Trips to scoring table to jot notes not made after each successful run (previously during all such segments a trip to the scoring table was made to jot notes after all successful runs). I estimate that if trips to the scoring table had been made to take notes after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.65 successful runs per minute.

The not keeping track of the number of perfects led to carefree abandonment, which in turn produced some very fast, very tightly controlled, bvery long (up to 30') runs, that were however imperfectly angled.

  3/15/11 @Y Gym -- L AF1 -- 48 1.00 (0.80 see comments) P6.1-5t-NS

Number perfects not counted. Trips to scoring table to jot notes not made after each successful run (previously during all such segments a trip to the scoring table was made to jot notes after all successful runs). I estimate that if trips to the scoring table had been made to take notes after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.80 successful runs per minute.

The not keeping track of the number of perfects led to carefree abandonment, which in turn produced some very fast, very tightly controlled, very long (up to 30') runs--some of these involved perfectly angled 90 degree turns.

As usual the ball was kept off the ground from the first to the fifth touch, and touched on every pace with alternating left & right feet.

  3/17/11 @Y Gym -- L AF1 45 43 1.05 (0.83) P6.1-5t-Rev-NS

Number perfects not counted.; no walks to scoring table to jot notes after each successful run. Estimate: if there had been walks to the scoring table after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.83 successful runs per minute.

Comparing this (AF1) segment to the first (non-AF1) segment of the day: this segment the turns were more accurately angled, but the runs were not as long or as fast.

  3/17/11 @Y Gym -- L no AF1 45 37 1.22 (0.93) P6.1-5t-Rev-NS

Number perfects not counted.; no walks to scoring table to jot notes after each successful run. Estimate: if there had been walks to the scoring table after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.83 successful runs per minute.

Day before yesterday, the 1st segment featuring no Af1, produced long, fast runs. Today, the first segment, featuring AF1, produced the long fast runs.

The scores today: AF1 0.83, no AF1 0.93. The scores last time I did this drill (February 19, 20): AF1 0.87, no AF1 0.91.

  3/20/11 @Y Gym -- L no AF1 40 40 1.00 (0.80) P6.1-5t-NS

Number perfects not counted; trips to scoring table to jot notes not made after each successful run (previously during all such segments a trip to the scoring table was made to jot notes after all successful runs). I estimate that if trips to the scoring table had been made to take notes after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.80 successful runs per minute.

The numerical score was improved compared to 1st segment of March 17, when this pattern with no-AF1 was last done; but there were few long fast runs this time. I felt clumsy; kicking the ball to the right with the right foot on the second touch of the runs, with AF1 not used, & on the first segment of the day, felt clumsy.

About half way through I realized, that best results are attained via careful placement of non-kicking foot at kick time.

  3/20/11 @Y Gym -- L AF1 53 40 1.33 (1.00) P6.1-5t-NS

Number perfects not counted. Trips to scoring table to jot notes not made after each successful run (previously during all such segments a trip to the scoring table was made to jot notes after all successful runs). I estimate that if trips to the scoring table had been made to take notes after each successful run, the rate would have been 1.00 successful runs per minute.

There were few long fast runs compared to the last time this pattern was done with AF1, which was 2nd segment March 17.

I felt convinced during and after this segment, that AF1 produced much better results than non-AF1 today. The key kicks in this pattern done today are R2 & R4 done with the right foot (I'm left-footed). Seems R2 is superior when AF1 is applied, especially if the segment is the first segment of the day.

There was a long phase when I was emphasizing the R2 kick during practice. Then I began to give equal time to L2 (kick to the left by left foot on second touch of the run). As of now, my performance is better on L2 & Lr than it is on R2 & R4; therefore the pattern that I perform better as of now I perform P6.1-5t-Rev-NS, which is like a lightning-bolt to the left, better than I perform the drill performed today, P6.1-5t-NS, which is like a lightning-bolt to the right.

  3/22/11 @Y Gym -- L no AF1 60 47 1.28 (0.97) P6.1-5t-Rev-NS

Number perfects not counted; no walks to scoring table to jot notes after each successful run. Estimate: if there had been walks to the scoring table after each successful run, the rate would have been 0.97 successful runs per minute.

A good segment. The quality of the runs was superior to the quality of the runs previous soccer practice--indicative that I am now more skilled at the lightning-bolt-left move emphasizing the left foot, than I am at the lightning-bolt-right move emphasizing the right foot.

The last few practices the more detailed notes have been placed in the comments column of this table. Starting today I am returning to putting these more detailed notes in the sports log.

Highest score ever for drill P6.1-5t-NS when performed during first segment of practice. The fact that on the final touch I kicked the ball at a curtain and not at a wall as has usually been the case, may have somewhat improved the score.

AF1+ method implemented for first time. AF1+ is like AF1, except that with AF1+, a deliberate attempt is made to start each kick with the foot to the inside of the ball.

This segment ran from 832 PM - 919 PM Boston time. From 911 PM to 924 PM Boston time, Lambert International Airport in St Louis, was hit by a 'Funnel Cloud' tornado. A funnel cloud is a 'rotating column of wind' (which reminds me of the 90 degree turns made on each touch in this drill). A few years ago, Detective Lambert came by my apartment to shout at me because some female had complained about some triviality she had instigated.

  4/26/11 @ O'Leary Field; Approx 605-715 PM -- -- -- -- -- -- Outdoor soccer game on grass surface

Hugo from Brandeis invited me to play soccer with his friends.

Although I was usually too tired to run around energetically, there were phases during which I was energetic enough to mount offensive dribbling runs. The players on the other team were all athletic young men but I was able to dribble around them and through them at will. On defense whenever I attacked a man with the ball I stole the ball or knocked it away if he did not pass it away or shoot it first. Every time an opposing player tried to dribble by me he failed.

I noted during the outdoors game: I have become about 25% quicker than I was about a year ago (I was quick to begin with); and, my outdoors on-grass dribbling has become very tightly controlled. This without any ground dribbling practice being done for a few years. The improvement in the ground-dribbling is a result of the air-dribbling (ball kept off ground) practice.

Hugo said I played very well and the black young man from Sierra Leone said I was "well skilled". I complimented them for being able to appreciate such despite the fact that I was 'out of shape', easily fatigued.

They invited me to play with them again around 2-3 PM on Sunday. My sports log also contains info re practices such as today's practice.

Soccer game with friends of Hugo from Brandeis, sort of repeat of 4/26.

I was not even half as good today as I was 4/26. I felt like I was not even half as quick as I was 4/26. I did not feel like attempting to dribble past defenders, and rarely attempted to dribble past defenders.

Apparently, I was not even half the man I was on 4/26, because on 4/26, prior to the start of the soccer game, I spent 53 minutes doing 60 successful runs of P6.1-5t-NS; whereas today, I did not warm-up in any way prior to the start of the game.

Hugo was for some reason not there today. The young black man from Sierra Leone was back, he put on an impressive display of offensive attacking dribbling.

They said they would be back next Sunday, same time, same station.

At start of runs, mentally concentrated on first two kicks of run. This segment started approx 3.5 hours after I wokup up today. Consumed just 12 oz. double-strength green tea with 5 tspns coconut palm sugar & half & half (all organic), & water (spring water & distilled water mixture) before start of practice. Evening of yesterday, ate/drank 3-pice KFC chicken & cole slaw & mashed potatoes meal, Trader Joe's Alphonso mango & lowfat yogurt drink (also consumed during night), lots of Trader Joe's organic mango nectar (also consumed during night), & Nature's Place organic Apple Juice bought at Hannaford Supermarket (also consumed during night). Wore 33 decible Howard Leight earplug in left ear only during segment (heretofore, have almost always worn earplugs of at least 28 decibel noise redux in both ears). Chewed two pieces of 4 mg Hannaford brand nicotine gum during the segment.

EARPLUGS in both ears today . Runs were of good quality and fast. There were an unusually high number of long, fast well-formed sharply angled runs. The failure rate from successful runs #30-#40 was unusually high, even though I was mentally prepared for such. I did not feel technically comfortable until after successful run #40. It's hrd to start with AF1+ on the first segment without warmup, because AF1+ requires more physical dexterity than AF1 or non-AF1, in that with AF1+, the foot starts to the inside of the ball on every kick.

EARPLUGS in both ears today . Re successful runs: quality runs between medium & good; speed was fast; alignment with cones-path was good. First 21 attempts were all successes. In total there were 12 failed attempts, 7 of which occurred in between successful runs #22-#30. During the error plagued phases I became flustered and forgot about proper technique; I was not mentally prepared for a high error rate during the successful run #21-#30 phase. Seemed also keeping track of failed attempts for first time impaired performance. Got flustered & distracted, thinking about how in Massachusetts, the disabled, retarded etc enjoy such a high counselor/patient ratio, whereas it seems the gifted are not only ignored but abused. After the practice Jose from Brazil, called me 'David Villa' (one of the world's top players), but he did not seem too enthused about me being 'David Villa'. After all, Jose is now an adopted son of Massachusetts.

Number of failed attempts doing drill done this segment, kept track of for first time. Given that there were 60 successes and 12 failures, I estimate, that maximum possible score as of now is 2.43/minute.

Was extra strict with myself in terms of trying to make 90 degree turns to the right on 2nd kick, as opposed to being satisfied with for example an 80 degree turn to the right on the second kick. Had 2 slices of pizza 2 hours before start segment (unusual for me to eat before doing these practices).

EARPLUGS in both ears today . Quality runs good, speed fast. The first 8 or so attempts all failed. During the practice I felt clumsy and also tired. The successful runs per minute score for the first 30 successful runs was just 1.15; for the second 30 successful runs it was 2.00. There were a few long (25' measured odometer-style) fast, sharply angled runs.

Approx 3 hours before start of practice I consumed mango nectar, green tea, and 2 pieces of toast. Then approx 45 minutes before start of practice I consumed a small coffee, sausage cheese & egg 'wrap, & hash-browns. Prior to the high scoring performances of the past few days I've been consuming just green tea & water; I've been able to feel how water before the start of a practice gives me more pep during the practice. Before the start of the practice today I forgot to drink water. Apparently: lack of water and/or food and/or coffee before start of practice, impairs performance for the first 20 minutes of the practice.
